About this piece: As a child, I was told not to stare at people. I might make them uncomfortable. The suggestion was that good girls spent time looking at their laps, hands folded, but I couldn’t help being drawn to the unfamiliar, the novel face, the curiously contorted bodies that seemed more common in my childhood experience.
