This piece has an amusing reference to the 1594 painting in the Louvre of Gabrielle d’Estrees, French King Henry IV’s mistress. The painting’s artist is unknown, probably because when he showed his mother what he painted she had a hissy fit, causing him to scrape away any reference to the artist’s identity, which is why I never show my mother any of my art anymore. Then the painting supposedly hung in a police station until 1937. The mind reels at the notion.
The two daughters in this piece are exactly what my mother envisioned. Sadly, she was mightily disappointed.
